Rotary Youth Exchange is a wonderful program I discovered almost one year ago. Its purpose is to break down international barriers, promote world peace, and inspire students to become better leaders. RYE is open to all high school students ages 15-18. There are easy and affordable requirements needed to apply, only a desire to challenge yourself and grow as a person. There are two programs RYE offered for high school students; short term exchange and a long term exchange.
A short term exchange is a family to family exchange. This means the student will travel to a country and spend 3-6 weeks with his/her host family. When that time is up he/she will return home with their exchange sibling, who in turn will spend 3-6 weeks living with the other student. For example: Student A travels from the USA to Germany for 4 weeks and stays with Student B and her family. At the end of 4 weeks Student A returns to the USA with Student B and Student B will live in her home. At the end of those 4 weeks Student B will return to Germany and the exchange will be complete.
A long term exchange is where a student travels to foreign country and goes to school there for about 10 months.
I am currently on day 5 of my short term exchange and I am loving it! I highly recommend this program. I have learned so much in just a few days, I can’t wait to see what the next 4 weeks bring. If you are interested in learning more about this program you can talk to your local Rotary club or go to the Rotary.org.
